We are pleased to announce Getaway Place’s 2012 rental rates! As with last year, our 2012 rental rates are all inclusive, there are no hidden fees — only taxes and (optional) travel insurance are omitted from the list price. All rentals include sheets and towels, with beds made prior to your arrival.  We will continue to extend our appreciation to our former guests by offering a 5% discount.

We invite everyone to participate in our survey regarding changes to our rental cycle. As you may know, a new bridge that will connect Corolla directly to the mainland is currently in the initial phases of construction. Once complete, this bridge will significantly reduce travel times to Getaway Place and other homes in the northern outer banks.

However, this bridge is not scheduled for completion until 2015-2016. To help reduce travel times until then, we are considering adjusting our rental cycle dates. We’d like your opinions on this via our quick, anonymous, online survey.

We are pleased to announce that he NC DOT has finalized the plan for a bridge to Corolla. The bridge would connect just south of Coinjock on the mainland to a point near the Corolla Bay subdivision in Corolla (just north of Getaway Place.) With these endpoints, the bridge would cut approximately 1 hour out of the drive. The project is projected for completion in 2016. Toll rates for the bridge are still being decided.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve ever found while combing the beach? Some pretty shells? A few dollars in change? In December Ray Midgett, a Corolla beach comber, found a shipwreck dating back to the time of Louis XIII and Charles I (mid 1600s.) The wreck was found just a few miles north of Getaway Place, near the lighthouse.

The Virginian Pilot, the local paper, just published an interesting article on the history of Corolla — here. The article mentions that Corolla provides most of the tax revenue for Currituck County. More directly, Corolla provides virtually all of the county’s revenue — an astonishing 90+%. Corolla is allocated roughly 10% of the county’s budget in return.
