We are pleased to announce Getaway Place’s 2011 rental rates! We will continue on in the Twiddy program – so you can continue to enjoy your vacation to its fullest. As with last year, our 2011 rental rates are all inclusive, there are no hidden fees — only taxes and (optional) travel insurance are omitted from the list price. All rentals include sheets and towels, with beds made prior to your arrival.  As always, repeat renters will continue to receive a 5% discount.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve ever found while combing the beach? Some pretty shells? A few dollars in change? In December Ray Midgett, a Corolla beach comber, found a shipwreck dating back to the time of Louis XIII and Charles I (mid 1600s.) The wreck was found just a few miles north of Getaway Place, near the lighthouse.

In just one week – Getaway Place will kick off its 2010 season! We’ve made a few changes to our home for the 2010 season and we’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about them. The largest change was our transition to the Twiddy program late last year. We hope your experiences with Twiddy thus far have been enjoyable and informative — if you have any remaining questions/concerns regarding our transition to Twiddy, please contact us. Other changes we’ve made for the 2010 season include:

• Bed/bath linens included in the price of your rental. Bath mats are also included.
• Keyless entry on the bottom floor — no need to carry keys around! Twiddy will send you a unique key code just prior to your vacation.
• A new gas grill for your cooking pleasure
• A new easy to use all in one remote for our third floor sound system

There are two items you should familiarize yourself with before heading to Corolla:

• Beach driving – The closest area for beach driving is the northern unpaved portion of NC12 about 5 miles north of Getaway Place. All standard “rules of the road” — including open container regulations — apply when driving on the unpaved extension. Remember to engage your 4×4 system prior to exiting the paved area (clearly marked.) For maximum comfort and enjoyment, Twiddy recommends that you lower your tire pressure to 18-20 psi. • Fishing – The state of NC enacted new fishing regulations in 2007. A fishing license is required for those wishing to fish in the many coastal water areas of the Outer Banks. A 10 day license can be purchased for $10 ($5 for NC residents). For more information on fishing requirements, visit Twiddy’s fishing faq. A license can be purchased online at http://www.ncwildlife.org or by calling 888-248-6834.

Even though many of you may still be digging out from this winter’s snowstorms — it is never too early to plan your summer vacation! We still have a few weeks available — so make your plans today! For those of you who are looking to beat the crowds (and the heat), why not try renting in May or September? The daily highs in May/September shouldn’t be too far off from their summer peaks, and Getaway Place’s pool is heated just in case things get a little cool. Most of Corolla’s shops will be open too.

The Virginian Pilot, the local paper, just published an interesting article on the history of Corolla — here. The article mentions that Corolla provides most of the tax revenue for Currituck County. More directly, Corolla provides virtually all of the county’s revenue — an astonishing 90+%. Corolla is allocated roughly 10% of the county’s budget in return.

As many of you know – the recent Nor’Easter caused significant flooding for portions of the Outer Banks. Fortunately, we are pleased to announce that Getaway Place, sustained no significant damages during the storm. However, many of the streets in the north of Whalehead are impassable due to the high water. It will take several days for the water to recede — until then, we’d like to send a few updates to our upcoming renters:

• Most of route 12 leading to Getaway Place is clear, although there were a few spots that had some standing water
• The dune line at the end of Albacore St was cut back significantly. The stairs leading down to the beach were destroyed; however, the beach is still accessible
• Many of Whalehead’s E/W streets between the 1st and 2nd row are impassable due to high water
• Higher than normal tides persist. As a result, beach driving is restricted to low tide and reduced to one lane
