The Virginian Pilot, the local paper, just published an interesting article on the history of Corolla — here. The article mentions that Corolla provides most of the tax revenue for Currituck County. More directly, Corolla provides virtually all of the county’s revenue — an astonishing 90+%. Corolla is allocated roughly 10% of the county’s budget in return.

As many of you know – the recent Nor’Easter caused significant flooding for portions of the Outer Banks. Fortunately, we are pleased to announce that Getaway Place, sustained no significant damages during the storm. However, many of the streets in the north of Whalehead are impassable due to the high water. It will take several days for the water to recede — until then, we’d like to send a few updates to our upcoming renters:

• Most of route 12 leading to Getaway Place is clear, although there were a few spots that had some standing water
• The dune line at the end of Albacore St was cut back significantly. The stairs leading down to the beach were destroyed; however, the beach is still accessible
• Many of Whalehead’s E/W streets between the 1st and 2nd row are impassable due to high water
• Higher than normal tides persist. As a result, beach driving is restricted to low tide and reduced to one lane

Getaway Place will be moving to the Twiddy rental program for the 2010 rental season. Twiddy’s program is geared toward the Northern Outer Banks and will continue to provide our guests with top-notch rental services. We have made some minor changes to our rental program for the 2010 season. First, as per the Twiddy contract, “Twiddy’s all inclusive pricing means that there are no additional required fees for the guests (travel insurance is optional).” Second, we will be adding bed/bath linens (with beds made prior to your arrival!) as part of the rental package.

Yes. Twiddy has a list of our renters for the past three years and will honor our 5% repeat renter discount.

I rented in 2009, will Twiddy allow me to rent the same week in 2010?

Yes. However, Twiddy will only hold your week for a limited amount of time. If you would like to rent with us again, please contact Twiddy at (866) 457-1190 as soon as possible.

I rented Getaway Place prior to 2009, but didn’t rent in 2009, will Twiddy give me the 5% discount?

Yes. However, Twiddy only has a list of renters for the past three years. If you rented prior to 2006, please contact us.
